HCL BPO (Business Processes Outsourcing) Services, early in 2011, employed around 1,300 people in Belfast on inbound and outbound call-centre activities, backend business processes and marketing campaign services.

It has clients in sectors including telecom, retail, banking, media utilities and publishing. The company was the first Indian business investor in Northern Ireland, and serves customers in Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Earlier this year it announced the closure of its Armagh base with the loss of 200 jobs. Shortly after, it announced the creation of 220 jobs at a new high-tech centre in Kilkenny but the company said there was no connection between the two events.

General manager Anita Barnard has insisted the company is still committed to the long-term development of its centre of excellence in Belfast and over the next five years planned to invest in new technologies.
