39. Hastings Hotels

Managing director: Howard Hastings

Employment: 1,100

Turnover: £36.4m

Pre-tax profit: £2m

The homegrown, family-run chain owns six hotels in Northern Ireland — the Europa and Stormont in Belfast, the Culloden at Cultra, Slieve Donard in Newcastle on the Antrim coast and the Everglades in Londonderry — and also has an interest in the Merrion Hotel in Dublin.

The group said the continuing economic downturn, with lower corporate and tourist activity combined with higher energy costs, took its toll on 2010 trading results. But the group added that it continued to trade profitably due to control of overheads.
