French-owned Michelin, opened its plant in Ballymena in 1969 specialising in the production of heavyweight radial tyres for trucks and buses, largely for export to the North and South American, Asia and European markets. The Northern Ireland operation is part of an international tyre manufacturing business with 68 manufacturing sites across five continents and commercial facilities in 170 countries.

Over the last few years, the Ballymena plant has achieved record levels of output and productivity, gained recognition for its safety record, environmental performance and for providing support to SMEs, through its subsidiary Michelin Development.

In 2011, Ballymena and the Northern Regional College (NRC) won the Best Education Partnership at the Apprentice of the Year awards organised by the Dept of Employment and Learning.

Michelin employs around 3,500 people in the UK across three sites; Ballymena, Dundee and Stoke-on Trent, its commercial headquarters and the site of a retread facility.
