66. Botanic Inns/Kurkova

Managing director: Stephen Magorrian

Employment: 508

Turnover: £21.6m

Loss: £0.2m

The Belfast-based pub group owns 16 premises in Northern Ireland including two small hotels and two off-licences.

Its portfolio includes some of Belfast’s best known pubs such as The Apartment, The Botanic Inn, The Globe, The Kings Head, The Kitchen Bar, Madisons Hotel, The Northern Whig and The Parador. Outside the city outlets include Denvir’s Hotel in Downpatrick and Molly Brown’s Kitchen and Bar in Newtownards.

Its most recent acquisition is Horatio Todd’s, a bar and restaurant formerly known as Rouge Cafe on Upper Newtownards Road which marked the company’s first incursion into east Belfast. That bar recently celebrated its first birthday, with management reporting that the venue had fared well during the Christmas snowy weather and thaw crisis, which spelled difficulties for many other pubs around the city and in Northern Ireland.

Botanic Inns is the only Northern Ireland-based firm to be included in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work list.
