Founded in 1976 by brothers Jim and Jack Dobson, the company has grown to become an established multinational food company.

Headquartered in Dungannon, it operates across ten sites in the UK and Ireland and from sales offices throughout Europe.

Formerly known as Dungannon Meats, Dunbia now employs more than 2,800 people across a wide range of high-tech and multi-skilled disciplines.

1,240 are employed in Northern Ireland and last year over £200,000 was invested in training at the Dungannon and Ballymena plants. Dunbia believe this highlights the importance it places on continually developing the skills of staff.

The acquisition of Ballymena-based Stevenson & Co in January 2009 saved more than 100 jobs and created 92 more.

The pork processing plant in Cullybackey had been facing closure due to rising costs. The purchase allowed Dunbia to build its pork distribution business as well as saving and creating local employment.

In November last year, the company dismissed speculation that it was on the brink of being sold to Moy Park owners Malfrig.

A newspaper report suggested they were in advanced negotiations with the Brazilian meat distribution giant, but managing director Jim Dobson insisted they were a privately owned firm committed to local growth.

The company says it values the relationships it has with stakeholders and develops these in order to maintain an efficient and effective supply chain from field to fork.

Dunbia serves every market sector including the UK’s largest multiple retailers and food manufactures, and exports to a vast customer base in over fifteen countries.

The company has won several industry awards in the last 18 months including ‘Star Supplier’, ‘Best for Innovation’ and ‘Best British Product’.

In October last year, the company was one of four local meat companies to participate in an Invest NI trip to the biannual SIAL food trade event in Paris.

They met with buyers from European supermarkets and food service organisations at the event, which welcomed almost 6,000 exhibitors from 105 countries, including Armenia, Nigeria and the Dominican Republic.
