Belfast International Airport handled 4.6 million passengers in 2009 and also embarked upon a £10m revamp of terminal facilities. July saw the opening of the expanded central security search facility, phase one of the three phase project, and in December the new link building, a brand new two story glass building was unveiled.

Phase three of the project will be completed in summer 2010 and will feature the relocation and upgrade of new catering and retail outlets on the departures concourse. EasyJet is the largest carrier at the airport and in December 2009 introduced new Airbuses onto their routes from Belfast International, but it also switched its Luton services to Belfast City Airport. Aer Lingus also plans to add a fourth daily service to London Heathrow.

Despite the deep economic recession air cargo activity remained relatively constant at just under 50,000 tonnes.
