Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged to continue his support for Northern
Ireland with the announcement of another major economic boost for the
province.
Mr Brown flew into Belfast yesterday for the second day of the US:NI
Investment Conference, which has seen around 100 top American executives
visit Northern Ireland this week to explore future business opportunities.
The Prime Minister told the conference in Stormont that Northern Ireland's
power-sharing ministers are to have an extra £1bn to spend on key projects
when the Executive increases its share of asset sales receipts from £1bn to
£2bn over the next three years.
Mr Brown said: "For years the political situation meant that Northern
Ireland missed out on the full benefits of growth and stability but today
Northern Ireland is emerging at a time of peace and prosperity."
Meanwhile, it was also announced by Sir Anthony O'Reilly, the chief
executive of the Independent News & Media Group — owners of the Belfast
Telegraph — that he would be investing a further £7m in a new
state-of-the-art printing press in Newry .
But the media magnate also criticised Mr Brown's Government for failing to
listen to demands for a cut in corporation tax.
