Skoda Fabia: City slicker
Now into its third generation, Skoda’s little Fabia has paid its dues and is now sorted as one of the best city cars.
Earning not just What Car magazine’s ‘Small Car’ magazine ‘Best Small Car of the Year’ award for 2015 but that well respected magazine’s overall ‘Car of the Year’ award too.
Lower and broader than its predecessor, new Fabia’s styling is the latest incarnation of the Czech company’s new design language, with an instantly recognisable grille and headlamp treatment.
It boasts generous space for both the front and rear passengers, along with a capacious, class-leading boot, featuring luggage nets, folding hooks, lots of pockets and, as an optional extra on estate versions of the car, an integrated bike holder that enables two bikes to be carried securely within the luggage compartment.
The engines have improved, with an EU6 rating and carbon emissions of as low as 88g/km without compromising the lusty performance. Five petrol variants and three diesels are available, all offering commendable fuel consumption figures.
There’s an optional panoramic glass roof and an uncluttered interior while we particularly liked the firm, comfortable seats, which proved their worth on long journeys. A multi-function steering wheel places almost all the major functions within fingertip reach.
Plenty of interior storage space falls to hand, from a decent sized glove box to bottle holders, a wastebasket and a multi-media holder.
The new Fabia is brimming with neat little touches, including neat hideaway storage boxes under each of the front seats, a parking ticket holder under the windscreen and a green ice scraper mounted on the fuel cap, a driver fatigue sensor and, on top-end models, an automatic speed limiter, electronic stability control and an automatic emergency braking system.
Hatchback and estate versions are offered and the car is available in a wide range of colours, including two-tones.There are S, SE and SE L trim levels, while a wide range of add-on accessories is available.
Fabia prices range from £10,600 up to £17,985 on the road.
