Staff and visitors to hospitals and health centres across the north west are being targeted in a renewed campaign around hand hygiene.
The ‘Clean Hands — Safe Hands’ initiative has been developed by the Western Health and Social Care Trust and was unveiled at Altnagelvin Hospital this week. It aims to optimise hand-washing compliance amongst staff, visitors and patients through vibrant signs drawing people’s attention to the hand hygiene message.
Initiated by the trust’s Infection Prevention and Control Team, the first phase of signage has been unveiled at Altnagelvin Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, the acute medical unit, care of the elderly Ward 41 and main hall area.
The launch coincides with the World Health Organisation’s annual Save Lives: Clean Your Hands day.
Elaine Way, Western Trust chief executive, said: “Good hand hygiene is central to the reduction in infection rates. It remains the simplest, most effective method of preventing healthcare associated infections.”
