Friends from far afield rolling into town on the same weekend is always a great excuse for a long catch-up over some good food and good wine.

And since I was lucky enough to have this happy coincidence occur recently, I decided to book a table for three at The Square and looked forward to a really enjoyable night out.

And I wasn’t disappointed.

Arriving for our meal at 7.30pm, myself and my three dining companions were seated at our table promptly and given menus to choose from.

Deciding to forgo starter courses, we opted to share a basket of bread with dipping oils while we waited for our main meals.

And speaking of our mains, I chose the parma-wrapped chicken with ricotta stuffing, while my friends went with the crispy salmon with sweet pepper and tomato coulis, and the escalope of veal respectively.

Side orders of creamy mash, vegetables and roast potatoes came as standard, and all was washed down with a bottle of Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon.

My parma-wrapped chicken was delicious, tender and beautifully complimented by the ricotta within. My only quibble would be that it could have done with a touch more ricotta, but this was a minor complaint.

The crispy salmon quickly disappeared from my friend's plate, who declared it “perfectly cooked and really enjoyable”.

My other companion’s escalope of veal suffered a similar fate and verdict, with her only complaint being the portion size — too small for her big appetite!

Out of all the three side orders, we agreed that the creamy potatoes were melt-in-the-mouth delicious. So much so that we were tempted to order another bowl full.

We opted for two liqueur coffees for dessert — one Bailey’s and one calypso — and a Tia Maria which rounded-off a really enjoyable dining experience.

The next time some old friends visit town I’ll be sure to bring them to The Square for what will no doubt be a great meal.
