The Dobbin's Inn

The Dobbin's Inn

My family has always been one for traditions, which we carry out during the year.

One of these occurs every Christmas Eve, when my mum, dad, brother and I venture out for lunch at our favourite eatery.

And although this tradition has been amended over the years, this is one meal we always enjoy.

My mum has been a recent addition to our party, as she now finds herself off work on December 24.

And, more importantly, our usual haunt closed a number of years ago, leaving us to find a new ‘favourite’ eatery in Carrickfergus.

Step forward Dobbin's Inn, which more than does the job with its friendly staff, buzzing atmosphere and great pub-style grub.

Located on High Street in Carrickfergus, Dobbin's itself is steeped in history, dating back centuries.

And if you ever pay the establishment a visit — which I highly recommend — be sure to ask about the story of Maud the ghost who many believe still appears throughout the building.

But now back to the food. Trying to save myself slightly for my impending Christmas dinner I decided against a starter, as did my mum.

However my brother and dad decided they could handle two courses and both selected vegetable broth to begin with.

When the two large bowls were served a short time later they were piping hot and declared very tasty.

And the accompanying wheaten bread and butter added a nice touch.

For mains my mum and I took advantage of a special offer allowing us to purchase two meals for £10.

My mum selected a breaded chicken breast with pepper sauce and chips for a side. I went for chicken goujons and chips, served with a sweet chilli sauce and salad.

My dad and brother again opted for the same choice — a bacon and cheese burger.

The meals were all served promptly together and could all be described as large, hearty plates of food.

The two meals for £10 were as large as those not included in the offer. Having both selected chicken we were not disappointed. Both the breast and the goujons were chunky and tender.

Each also came with plenty of chips, side salad and the required sauce.

There were no complaints about the burgers either.

Declared to be freshly cooked with a great taste sealed in, they were smoothed in just the right amount of cheese, with plenty of bacon loaded on top. A portion of chips completed both meals.

I have eaten in Dobbin's many times before and always enjoy the great pub-style food.

The great history of the building, along with the friendly staff and the guaranteed buzzing atmosphere, make it a must try.

A fantatsic hotel, with great bed and breakfast rates - and a fantastic Ulster Fry to set you up for the day ahead.
