Rieu serves up festive treat

Internationally acclaimed violinist put on a show to remember in Belfast's Odyssey Arena last night.

The star served up a series of wonderful music and kicked proceedings off by walking on stage through the audience.

A this 25th anniversary commemoration of Rieu's Johann Strauss Orchestra it wasn’t all about the music as Rieu served up plenty of laughs too.

An oversized foam hammer, a soprano disguised as a wind-up doll and a cavalcade of fake snow were amongst treats.

Rieu was joined by musicians from Australia, Hungary, Germany, Brazil, Russia and South Africa.

Instrumentally, we were treated to a zither solo, a frantic duel between church bells and a xylophone, and a father/son drum duet.

This approach helped give standards like Tales From The Vienna Woods, Nessun Dorma and The Holy City new life.

There was a wonderful moment when the orchestra's performance of Happy Birthday for a man in the audience celebrating his 99th birthday.

But one of the highlights had to be White Christmas with the ‘snow’ coming down. A wonderful festive treat.
