Free city parking for seasonal shoppers

By Pauline Reynolds
Tuesday, 1 December 2009

From now until Boxing Day, Belfast shoppers can take advantage of free on-street parking in some parts of the city from 4.30pm each day.

An estimated 330 spaces are up for grabs in Bedford Street, Linenhall Street, Adelaide Street, Alfred Street, Ormeau Avenue, Franklin Street, Clarence Street and Linenhall Street West.

And John Moore, president of Belfast Chamber of Trade, is hoping other car parking providers will follow the example of the Department for Regional Development, which is behind this scheme.

“The retail sector is one of the stalwarts of the economy here and despite the downturn continues to be one of the region’s main employers,” he said.

“This initiative will encourage other car parking providers to provide reduced prices for consumers and we hope to announce more parking deals in the future.”
