Call for more police after crime spree

Residents of North Belfast are being warned to be vigilant following a spate of burglaries in the Greater Shankill area last weekend.

The DUP's William Humphrey said police at Tennent Street had reported a total of 11 burglaries in the area, including Ballysillan, between Friday and Monday.

The Assembly member, who is calling for increased police patrols in the wake of the crime spree, said a number of cars had been stolen in so-called creeper burglaries, while wallets, televisions, DVD players, playstations and other electrical goods had also been stolen. The MLA revealed that one resident reported how "a burglar waved what appeared to be a gun in the direction of the householder when challenged" but that it was not known whether the weapon was real or a replica.

"All of this is deeply worrying and is very traumatic for the victims. Burglary brings a terrible sense of violation," he said.
