Primary school sets new world record
Tuesday, 17 November 2009
Storybook characters came to life this week at one local primary school as pupils and staff achieved a brand new Guinness World Record.
Carrs Glen Primary School brought literacy to life, creating the record for the largest gathering of storybook characters.
And despite there being no record like this already in existence, the school still had a nailbiting wait to see if they had met the standard set by Guinness World Records.
The record breakers were joined on the day by an official adjudicator.
Speaking to The CT, Principal Derek Harkness said: “We had many different characters on display, ranging from Hansel and Gretel, the two Ugly Sisters, the Gingerbread Man and James Bond.
“There was a great range of infant books represented, right through to some of the classics adored by the older children.
“It really was a great day, with parents getting involved as well and it was a nervous wait until we heard we had set the record.
“The children are absolutely delighted. It was a great end to a fun-filled day and we are all now hoping we make it into the next edition of the book.”
The record breaking day formed part of the school’s calendar of events as it marks its 70th anniversary this year.
And, according to Mr Harkness, the day also highlighted the importance of literacy to the children.
He added: “As our business is about education it is fitting for our school that we created a record for the most people dressed up as story book characters.
“As a school we felt this was an appropriate record to set because it was one which would highlight the importance and value we place on literacy.
“It also allowed for maximum participation from our year one to our year seven pupils and facilitated our wider school community of staff and parents to join in making for a sense of enjoyment and fun for all involved.”
Before being awarded their certificate on behalf of Guinness World Records, the staff and pupils enjoyed a story telling session.
A spokesman for Guinness World Records said: “This is a fantastic achievement by Carrs Glen Primary School, made all the more special because it took place on Guinness World Records Day.
“The adjudicator that was there on the day was very impressed with the school and the set-up.
“We would also like to wish the school every congratulations as it celebrates its 70th birthday this year.”
