Silver Surfers in libraries
Wednesday, 19 May 2010
Four local libraries are inviting people over 50, who are interested in learning how to use a computer, to take part in this year’s Silver Surfers’ Day.
Silver Surfers’ Day is the biggest, national campaign to promote use of digital technologies by older people. It is run by Digital Unite and was started in 2002. Silver Surfers’ Day is its ninth year and takes place this year on Friday, May 21, at Ardoyne Library, Chichester Library, Grove Library and Rathcoole Library in Newtownabbey.
During Silver Surfers’ Day you will be able to come along and spend an hour in the library with a tutor who will take you through simple step-by-step instructions to help you find out more about how to use a computer.
Business in the Community in Northern Ireland is involved in Silver Surfers’ Day by recruiting, training and allocating volunteer tutors to specific libraries so the computer tutors helping Silver Surfers on the day will be employees of local businesses working in the community.
Kim Aiken, Learning Development manager with Libraries NI, explained: “Silver Surfers’ Day is designed to be a free fun event which will help you on your way with using a computer.
“The idea of Silver Surfers’ Day is to take the fear of computers away from older people and with free internet and computer use for all library members, local libraries are keen to invite you in to use their facilities.”
Everyone is welcome to sign up to a free one-hour slot and be a Silver Surfer on Friday, May 21. For more information on libraries celebrating this event or to book a place, call into a library or go to www.librariesni.org.uk.
