THIS year's Festival Fortnight in Donaghadee is set to finish on a wing and prayer with the return of the highly popular Birdman competition.

The festival, which sees more than 25 events taking place over two weeks will come to a climax when would-be aviators attempt man powered flight off the harbour in a variety of home-made flying machines and outfits in the hope of winning the £1,000 prize money.

TV and radio personality George Jones will be commentating and the total prize fund is £2,600.

Opening on August 10 with the annual raft race and Lifeboat Festival the Festival Fortnight will run until August 24 with activities every day designed to appeal to all ages with thrills and spills on two wheels and four, water based activities, dancing and music.

Co-ordinated by the Donaghadee Commerce and Development Group (DCDG) the programme also boasts highlights of an Ulster-Scots festival, an Indian and Chinese festival, an autotest organised by the Ulster Automobile Club and a live broadcast by Hugo Duncan.

Chairman of DCDG David Cochrane thanked all those involved in growing the festival from a weekend event. "I hope it will not only encourage our townsfolk to attend the events but also encourage visitors to come to Donaghadee. All we need now is the weather."
