Holywood cyclist Lewis Ferguson has raced his way to gold in the Mountain Bike Cross Country Race at the 2013 World Police and Fire Games on Saturday.

Lewis, who finished first in the 18-29 year old category at Kilbroney Park, said: "I was thrilled to win the cross country race, and I would like to thank everyone from the White Watch Springfield Fire and Rescue Service who have supported me during my years in the Fire Service.

"I was really pleased to win the gold medal for Team Northern Ireland and add to our country's overall medal tally and also as a proud member of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service."

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne congratulated the North Down man, adding: "This is a fantastic achievement by Lewis and I am absolutely delighted that he has won Gold for Northern Ireland in this very prestigious event.

"The World Police and Fire Games are incredibly competitive and attract athletes from right across the world.

"This is a great achievement and having known Lewis for many years, he has always been a very dedicated cyclist who has always kept himself in peak fitness and this gold medal is a fitting tribute to his skill and dedication."
