Bangor Court closure possibility

Bangor court house is one of six court houses across Northern Ireland that could close within five months.

North Down MLA Peter Weir said: "The news that the Justice Department is proposing to close Bangor Courthouse, along with four other courthouses is sad andisappointing for North Down.

“Given the pressures on the budget it is perhaps not surprising that the Department is seeking to centralise court services, but this proposal leaves a lot of questions to be answered. This will clearly inconvenience many of those who use the court. It is something we need to press for with urgency," he added.

Gordon Dunne MLA said: “I am very alarmed at news that Bangor Courthouse may be proposed for closure by the Department of Justice, this would cause great alarm within Bangor and the surrounding area. North Down appears to have become an easy target for closures and reductions in the levels of service in attempts at reducing costs.

“I will be proposing a notice of motion to North Down Borough Council opposing this decision, and will also be tabling an Assembly Question to the Minister of Justice seeking answers on these latest plans which will impact on services in North Down.”

Newtownards court is thought to be taking on additional cases coming from Bangor.
