Book of honour to commemorate Ards’ First World War dead

For the first time, Ards is to have a Book of Honour commemorating those from the borough who lost their lives in the First World War.

Research has begun for the ‘The Ards First World War Book Of Honour’, which will not only list those who died, but also, where possible, provide biographical details and photographs of soldiers, seamen, airmen and nurses who died on active service between 1914 and 1918.

Those who died up to the end of August 1921 from causes attributable to service will also be included.

The book is being compiled by Bangor man, Barry Niblock, who is working in collaboration with the Ards-based Blair Mayne Research Society.

Ards Borough council is supporting the publication and encouraging local people to contribute information about any armed forces personnel who died on active service in World War One.

Barry Niblock said: “Between 1914 and 1918 large numbers of men and women left all parts of Ards to serve in the Great War. They departed with a sense of duty and without much thought for their own personal safety. Having grown up in Ards, I want to commemorate their sacrifice.

“I am very grateful to Ards Borough Council for their support and I appeal to readers for photographs and information to include in the book”

The book is expected to be in print early in 2011 and will be available to purchase from local outlets.
