Visitors to the recycling centre in Newtownards can claim a free bag of compost next week as part of a campaign to raise awareness of ‘green’ recycling.
The compost give-away is being organised by Ards Borough Council in partnership with arc21 and Natural World Products, the company which processes all the green and food waste which is collected through brown bins in Ards, as well as the garden waste brought to the council’s seven recycling centres.
Since food recycling was introduced in Ards last April, more than 6,000 tonnes of food and green waste have been recycled through brown bins, with a further 2,300 tonnes being diverted from landfill through local recycling centres.
“This giveaway of compost shows local people just what all their recycling efforts produce — a natural product which not only has great benefits for gardens, but also for the environment,” said Clive Catterson, the council’s waste awareness officer.
The free compost will be on offer at the Waste Recycling Centre, North Road, Newtownards from Monday, May 17, for as long as stocks last.
