Girl found dead in Ards

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl has been found dead from suspected solvent abuse in Newtownards.

The girl was discovered at approximately 1am on Monday at Glenford Park in Corry Street.

The victim, who is from Belfast, had been living in the nearby Ashgrove Residential Unit having been placed there by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

MP for Strangford, Alderman Jim Shannon expressed sadness at the news.

“I was on my way to Westminster when I heard the news and my thoughts immediately went to the family and friends of this child and I prayed for God’s comfort for them,” he said.

“As a father of three normal boys, I have known many a heartache and many worries but I simply cannot even begin to imagine what this would be like and I take this opportunity to assure the friends and family that the thoughts and prayers of this whole community is with you.”

A statement from the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust said: “The trust regrets the sad and untimely death of this young person. Kate Thompson, director of Children's Services, South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust offers her condolences to the family at this sad time.”

Police have confirmed that the body of a girl was found and that enquiries are ongoing. They are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage.

A spokeswoman at FASA in Bangor said that solvent abuse is a huge killer. One in four people die across the UK after trying it for the first time.
