Hospitals find play is best medicine

Pupils from Connor House Pre-school, Bangor, had a Well Teddy Clinic at the Ulster Hospital. Joining them were (back row): Fiona Little (Radiographer), Lindsay Hanna (Radiographer), Jane-Marie Gilmore (Play Specialist) & Heather Lyle (Connor House)

Staff from the Children’s Unit and the Emergency Department at the Ulster Hospital enjoyed a healthy dose of fun with Play in Hospital Week last week.

The event promoted the role of the Hospital Play Specialist in the hospital/hospice/community setting, celebrated achievements of hospital play programmes nationally and increased public awareness of the value of play for sick children and young people in hospital.

As part of ‘Play in Hospital Week’, children were provided with ‘messy’ play sessions including painting and collage for children, parents and staff.

Play specialists provided sessions on the value of play and communication with children for medical students.

The invaluable contribution of the Clown Doctors was also recognised.

The ‘Well Teddy Clinic’ at the Ulster Hospital has proven invaluable in preparing five to seven-year-olds for admission to hospital.

Children from local primary schools are invited to bring their teddy to hospital, where a doctor examines the teddy and they can watch a video about ‘Judy Bear’ coming to hospital to have an operation and also see ‘Ted Bear’ have an x-ray in the A&E department.
