Jobs boost for Bangor

Poundland says it plans to open a new store in Bangor after an extremely successful first year in Northern Ireland.

Retail operations director for Poundland, Tim McDonnell said: “It is forecast that Northern Ireland will be our most successful region in the UK.”

Poundland, which opened its first Irish store in Belfast in October last year, has 14 stores across Northern Ireland, and by the end of this year there will be six more across the country, including the Bangor store.

Cllr Peter Weir DUP MLA said: “The announcement by Poundland that they are to include Bangor as a location for the |expansion of their network throughout Northern Ireland is greatly welcomed.

“While it is unclear how many of the new 140 jobs throughout Northern Ireland are to be located in the new store in Bangor, it is a significant jobs boost for the hard pressed local economy.

“It is some light at the end of a very dark tunnel for the local North Down economy, particularly the retail sector which has been under tremendous pressure with a number of local shops unable to survive the economic downturn.”
