Sexual assault was ‘horrifying’

Wednesday, 10 December 2008

There has been widespread condemnation following the sexual assault of a young woman in Bangor last week.

The 20-year-old victim was walking through the Kilcooley area of the town in the early hours of Sunday, November 30, when the attack occurred.

Councillor Alex Easton, who is also chair of North Down DPP, described the attack as “shocking and horrifying”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with this young woman who has suffered an unspeakable and terrifying trauma,” he said.

“I know anyone who can help the police will do so and I encourage them to do so with urgency. The perpetrator must be made amenable to the courts for this heinous crime.”

Councillor Peter Weir said the incident was “sickening”.

“An attack of this nature is a dreadful experience for anyone to go through, and while my thoughts and prayers are with the victim of this assault, the onus is not just upon giving support to the attacked woman but also ensuring that the perpetrator is brought to justice,” Mr Weir said.

Councillor Tony Hill also condemned those behind the attack.

“This attack was simply despicable. This harrowing incident has sent shockwaves through the local community,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the young woman at what must surely be a very difficult time.”

Police said the incident took place between 12am and 2am.

Detectives investigating the crime said they would like to make a special appeal to a man, described as 18-21-years-old, 5ft 8in tall with a lean build, who spoke to the victim prior to the assault, to contact them immediately.
