Scene setter Sasha to switch on Bangor lightsLESLEY HOUSTON

A LUCKY pupil from Rockport School in Holywood will perform a special duty this weekend to kick off the festive season when they turn on Bangor's Christmas tree lights.

Year Six pupil Sasha Sharma will turn on the season lights after winning a yuletide art competition.

Sasha's creation was selected as the winner by North Down mayor Wesley Irvine and this Saturday, November 17, Sasha will do the seasonal switch-on honours during a special ceremony at Castle Park in front of the Town Hall.

Events commence at 5.30 when the skies above Bangor will be illuminated by a fireworks display before the official switch-on.

As well as switching on the lights, Sasha's work of art will also be used as the design for this year's Mayor's Christmas card.

Alison Stobie, tourism manager, said: "The switching on of the Bangor Christmas tree lights is the perfect event to make everyone in the family feel like the festive season has arrived, wrap up warmly and come along and enjoy the show.

"On a more serious note, please make sure to follow all safety instructions on the night.

"As well as producing an amazing show, safety is our priority at this Christmas Show, so it is extremely important that you obey health -amp; safety rules and co-operate fully with the marshals. Remember also that due to the volume of people it may be necessary to close some roads and the Omniplex cinema and leisure centre should be temporarily accessed from the Gransha Road between 5 and 6pm."

Mr Irvine said: "Congratulations to Sasha on winning our competition and I am delighted to have her beautiful picture as my Christmas card this year."

Road closures may apply during the night with some roads in and around the Omniplex cinema and leisure centre being subject to restrictions. The areas will be temporarily accessed from the Gransha Road between 5pm and 6pm.

Stalls from food traders will also be on site to offer warm beverages and hot food to help keep out the cold.
