Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, says PSNI

Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Police in Castlereagh have urged the public not to leave valuables in their vehicles.

It follows a spate of thefts from vehicles, including satellite navigation systems, throughout the south of the city.

A spokesman for the PSNI: “Don’t make it easy for criminals, keep your valuables out of sight or, better still, don’t keep them in your vehicle at all.

“Your vehicle is a very important part of your life and this type of crime can cause great distress, so please take note of the following precautions.

“Never leave shopping or presents in view. If they can be seen they can be stolen. Always lock your possessions away out of sight in the boot.”

The spokesman said it was also important to ensure you take your keys from the ignition even if it is only for a short period.

“Lock your vehicle and close windows every time you leave your vehicle,” the spokesman continued.

“Take all valuables from your car when you leave it. Never leave cash, credit cards, chequebook, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the car.

“If you have no choice but to do so, make sure they are hidden well out of sight before you begin your journey — thieves may be watching you park.

“Think about where you park. Try to park in a well-lit busy area. Avoid secluded dark areas.

“Engage your steering lock when parking. Consider using secondary anti-theft devices.

“Always close the windows and sunroof, lock the doors and activate any security devices when leaving your car unattended.”

If you have been the victim of a theft from your vehicle or wish to report any information to police you can telephone officers on 0845 600 800 or alternatively contact the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
