One south Belfast street is celebrating after it won a competition to be the ‘best street' in the area.
Residents of Empire Drive in the Blackstaff area have been rewarded for the pride and care they take in looking after their street and gardens with the accolade in the 2009 Blackstaff Best Street competition as part of Blackstaff Community Week.
After touring the streets over two separate evenings, David Flinn, chairman of Belfast Civic Trust, and committee member Fergus Bell, who judged the competition, have just released their comments and judged Empire Drive in the Roden Street area as being the best Blackstaff street for 2009.
Mr Flinn said: “First may we say how impressed we were by the community feel of the area and the obvious pride which people had in their area.
“Fergus and I were also impressed by the general cleanliness and lack of litter. It was hard to choose one street over the other, but of them all I think Empire Drive stood out as a street where people took a pride in their gardens and the street. Empire Drive benefited from trees and lovely plants in people's gardens.
“We would also mention Donegall Parade as being a close runner-up. Again the street benefited from well kept gardens. Donegall Gardens was close behind. It was hard to distinguish which of these two streets was better. Other streets worthy of a mention were Ebor Street and Ebor Drive.”
