Ex-soldier faces rape charge

An ex-soldier injured by a bomb in Afghanistan has been charged with rape and false imprisonment.

Gerald Verner (23) is also accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm, sexual assault and threats to kill against the same woman.

Belfast Magistrates Court heard the alleged offences were committed in the city last Monday.

Verner, of Forthriver Park, Belfast, was remanded in custody after police opposed bail due to the degree of |violence allegedly used. A detective told the court the incident has had a “devastating effect” on the woman he is accused of raping and that there was a risk of interference with |witnesses.

Verner, who denies all six counts against him, was remanded in custody until next month.
