Gasworks Bridge project funding bid

Plans for a project to build a footbridge to link the gasworks and the Ormeau Park in south Belfast are to be developed and submitted for European funding, it was revealed at Belfast City Council last week.

The Gasworks Bridge Project is up against two other schemes in the city to be developed further and submitted in order to attempt to attract funding — the others being a ‘Cultural Corridor' near the city centre and a ‘Public Service Centre’ at Girdwood in north Belfast

Laganbank councillor Pat McCarthy, who lives in the Lower Ormeau area, said: “There are people who think there could be trouble at it, but is that an excuse for it not being built?

“It should all be about connecting communities and looking to the future. To me it's just ordinary common sense.”

Councillor McCarthy said the project is being worked on for submission, although it is still at an early stage.

The council will seek European funding under Peace III Priority 2.1 — Creating Shared Public Spaces.
