A local environmental project has pierced through to the grand final of a National Lottery competition — thanks to people picking up the phone and voting in their thousands.

Fending off competition from right across the UK, Laganscape, a eco-community project based at Lagan Valley, has secured itself a place in the ‘top three’ final — to be aired on BBC television this September.

Project manager, Brendan O’Connor said: “Reaching the finals of the National Lottery Awards is a great boost to Laganscape and all those involved.

“It is a very fitting recognition to our partner organisations, hard working volunteers and school groups who have worked tirelessly to deliver a range of projects. We are all very excited about reaching the finals and hope the public will continue to support us by voting again.”

The annual awards scheme is in recognition of UK projects that have made best use of original lottery funding by making a difference to the lives of local people and communities.

Laganscape’s aim is to facilitate involvement of people and community groups who care passionately about their local area.

Joanne Logue, a community volunteer with the Laganscape project, said: “Winning this award would mean a lot to the Laganscape volunteers. Although we don’t ask for recognition we’d be delighted to win as we are proud of this project and would like more people to have the opportunity to hear about it and maybe get involved.

“With Laganscape, I found a lovely, like-minded group of people of various ages who were very happy to get involved in whatever work came up during the volunteer task of the day. So far we have planted trees, cleared overgrown woodland and learnt the basics of building a willow bird hide. You choose to come along to the tasks you are interested in and need only put in as much or as little effort as you are physically able but it all helps towards looking after our environment.”

People can vote for the park by either telephoning the special lottery number 0844 686 6390, or by visiting the lottery’s website www.national-lottery.co.uk. Votes must be recorded between 9am July 26 and noon August 13. Winners will be announced on live BBC1 on the September 4, 2010.
