Type 2 diabetes test

The Diabetes UK Roadshow will visit the front of the City Hall in Belfast on Thursday August 18 and Friday August 19 from 9am to 5pm to help people find out more about diabetes and discover whether they are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The roadshow, supported by the Big Lottery Fund, aims to identify some of the estimated 10,000 people in Northern Ireland who have Type 2 diabetes but are not aware of it.

This is vital because Type 2 Diabetes can be undetected for 10 years or more, meaning 50 per cent of people already have complications by the time they are diagnosed.

The roadshow will also raise awareness of risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. In 2010 Diabetes UK’s Roadshow programme carried out nearly 10,000 risk assessments and more than half of those people were referred to their local GP.

hot air balloon festival

The charming Georgian village of Moira will be the location of Northern Ireland’s first international Hot Air Balloon Festival from Saturday August 27 to Monday August 29.

The 40 acre parkland of Moira Demesne, located at the edge of Moira, will host up to 30 hot air balloons that will put on a number of impressive colourful displays (weather dependent) morning and evening over the course of the three day event.

While the hot air balloons are in the skies there will be a variety of activities ‘on the ground’ to occupy the interests of visitors from all age groups; and on Saturday August 27, U105 will produce a roadshow live from the Hot Air Balloon Festival.

This three day event has something to offer everyone; there will be live music, a fun fair and an artisan food festival with over 25 gourmet producers offering delights that will include Armagh cider, speciality cheeses, olives, crepes, fresh breads, home baking, strawberries and cream.

In addition to the colourful display of hot air balloons during daylight hours, on Saturday and Sunday evenings at approximately 9pm a ‘Fire and Light Show’ will take place. During these stunning shows up to 15 balloon pilots will ignite burners and transform the night sky to the sound of music in a dramatic display of colour, light and sound.

Under 16s can enter the event for free when accompanied by an adult and there will be plenty for younger visitors to enjoy such as bouncy castles, a bucking bronco, bungee trampolines and much more.

The Mayor of Lisburn, councillor Brian Heading said: “I would encourage everyone to come along on at least one of the days and see the spectacular sight of these colourful hot air balloons and enjoy the atmosphere in Moira Demesne.”
