A south Belfast student has been awarded a prize at a prestigious academic awards ceremony held at the Ulster Museum.

Former Victoria College student Manvi Singhal received the third-place prize at the Hans Sloane Awards, which recognise the highest achievers in A Level biology, chemistry and physics in Northern Ireland.

Manvi, who is now studying medicine at Queen’s University, said: “Receiving a Hans Sloane award for my A-Level science results has been a fantastic experience and I am now looking forward to completing my degree.”

Principal of Victoria College, Ms Patricia Slevin, said: “Manvi's outstanding results in her A Level science subjects reflect the dedication she has given to her studies and I, along with her teachers, am thrilled it has been recognised with this prestigious award.”

Marshall McKee, honorary secretary to the trustees of the Hans Sloane Memorial Fund, said: “The Hans Sloane award is in place to applaud young achievers as well as highlighting the importance of continuing Northern Ireland's proud history of educational excellence.

“It is a pleasure to recognise Manvi for her outstanding academic achievements in the sciences.”

Established in 1960, the Hans Sloane Memorial Fund was founded to commemorate the life and work of notable Killyleagh physician, scientist and collector, Sir Hans Sloane.
