Markets plan to go ahead

Plans to restore the Markets area in Belfast have been given the green light.

Department for Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy attended a meeting to discuss the Tunnels Project, a scheme that has been in planning for almost two years, with the Markets Development Association (MDA) aiming to regenerate the area.

The project aims to convert the old Victorian arches at East Bridge Street for community use.

MDA project manager Gerard Davison said: “The development is going very well, the regeneration will hopefully help to resolve social issues in the area.”

The MDA is conducting an economic appraisal of the tunnels to identify what resources will be needed to transform them for community use.

Mr Murphy instructed his officials to draw up a draft lease which will allow the MDA to lease the arches.

Sinn Fein Councillor Deirdre Hargey welcomed the fact that the plan could now progress.
