Tommy Ormerod is the toast of south Belfast after being crowned the regional winner of the Kwik Fit Insurance Lollipop Person of the Year Awards 2010.
Tommy (75) has been lollipop man at Fullerton House Prep School for 10 years and is much loved by the pupils who he helps across the road every day.
The children left their own special tributes to Tommy through the competition website and a ‘This is Your Life’ booklet of art work, containing personal messages, interviews and class letters.
A special assembly was held at the school, where the children wrote and preformed a rap about their favourite lollipop man.
Tommy is also a keen charity fundraiser and last year raised over £900 for Children in Need after completing a sponsored skipping challenge at the school.
The children showed their support for Tommy by decorating their classrooms with lollipop sticks. The ex-boxer also takes time out of his schedule each week to coach his local boxing club.
Billy Dickson, chairman of Blackstaff Homeowners’ Association, said Tommy’s fitness levels would “put a lot of young people to shame”.
He added: “Tommy has been living in Blackstaff as long as I can |remember. The community is very proud of him.”
Headteacher Alan Jennings said that as soon as his pupils heard about Kwik Fit Insurance competition they were keen to support Tommy and got straight to work preparing the winning entry.
He said: “The children really enjoyed taking part and we think Tommy thoroughly deserves his title as the best lollipop person in Northern Ireland.”
June Lynch, MD of Kwik Fit Financial Services, said: “It was evident from the entries we received just how much Tommy is loved and valued by the whole of Fullerton House Prep School.
Tommy is a worthy winner for Northern Ireland.”
Tommy wins £100 while the school will receive £500. Should he win the UK finals, Tommy will be in line for a further £500, while the winning school will be presented with a cheque of £3,000 to spend on school equipment.
