Ormeau Park mural unveiled

A specially commissioned mural (pictured right) celebrating Latin American culture has been unveiled at Ormeau Park in south Belfast.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Tom Hartley, joined members of the city’s Latin American community as they celebrated the diversity of Belfast with the new piece of artwork at the park.

The ‘Shared City’ mural project began after Professor Bill Rolston from the University of Ulster met two Chilean artists and invited them to Belfast to paint the mural, in partnership with the local community.

The Lord Mayor said: “Belfast has become a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions and this new mural celebrates the diversity in our city and encourages a sense of shared space.

“This bright mural signifies a bright future ahead for this great city and paints Belfast as a welcoming place for people from all around the world; a place that celebrates diverse religious, cultural and eth

nic traditions. Through these kinds of initiatives we can help to promote understanding and create a more tolerant and open society.”

Belfast muralists Micky Doc, Mark Ervine and Danny Devenny helped paint the mural at the weekend.

The mural was commissioned by Northern Ireland’s Latin American Association in partnership with Belfast City Council, the Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion Unit and Intercomm, a cross-community peace-building organisation.

The initiative has been partly funded by Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Unit.
