£7.2m arts centre’s progress revealed
Thursday, 26 November 2009
The Crescent Arts Centre is on target to reopen next April, after the completion of a massive, multi-million pound renovation scheme.
It’s just been announced that the listed Victorian complex in the Queens Conservation Area of the city has less than six months of work left to complete — and it’s on budget.
The ambitious £7.2million upgrade incudes the creation of new state-of-the-art dance studios, performance spaces and art and photography studios.
It will also offer flexible work areas to accommodate a growing demand from Northern Ireland’s ever expanding creative arts industry.
Refurbishment and renovation began in September last year and up to 25 staff are currently working on site at any one time.
Crescent Arts Centre chairman David Hill said the new premises would be enjoyed for generations to come.
“We are pleased to announce that with the full support of our funders, staff, tutors and students, we are on schedule to re-open within budget and on time in less than six months,” he said.
“This project represents a major investment in the artistic and cultural life of Northern Ireland.
“It will ensure that we continue to provide future generations, from across all communities and of all abilities, with the opportunity to learn and experience the arts using tailor-made facilities.
“At 2,052 square metres, these significant renovations will double useable space at the Crescent which is currently being restored to its former glory.”
The Crescent Arts Centre offers a diverse range of classes and workshops in many art forms, including music, dance and visual arts.
It is currently operating from temporary premises at 165 Ormeau Road.
