Junior sports boys and girls tap into the Olympic spirit

Paul Deighton, chief executive of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, joins local children to promote the Disability Sports challenge ahead of the 2012 Games
enlargePaul Deighton joined children at Queen’s Sport’s Summer Activity Scheme and Disability Sports’ NI’s 5 Star Disability Challenge, as part of a UK-wide day of events to raise children’s awareness of disability sports ahead of the 2012 Games.
Joanne O’Hagan, Disability Sports NI and Johnny McCarthy, player with the Knights Wheelchair Basketball Team, delivered the Disability Challenge project to children attending Queen’s Summer Scheme.
To help raise awareness of disability sports, each child was given the opportunity to participate in five challenges, each one based on a Paralympic event.
The innovative project is funded by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and supported by the Department of Education.
It aims to contribute to the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by increasing children’s awareness and understanding of disability.
Kevin Murray, PE and Sport Development Officer at Queen’s Sport said: “Through Queen’s involvement in this project we hope to challenge commonly held negative attitudes about people with disabilities and to inspire and encourage more disabled and non-disabled children to become more active in sport.
“Queen’s has been included in the official training camps guide for athletes attending the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and we look forward to encouraging more young people to become involved in sport as part of the legacy of the London Games.”
Angela Hendra MBE, chairperson of Disability Sports NI said: “We are delighted with the success of the Five Star Challenge Education Project since its launch last year and are happy that Queen’s Summer Activity Scheme has come on board so enthusiastically with the project to help us mark two years to go to the 2012 Games.”
Disability Sports NI will be running the ‘5 Star Disability Sports Challenge’ in primary schools throughout Northern Ireland up to 2012.
