Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has announced that G M Design Consultants have been appointed to develop a masterplan for Dromore.
Over the next 18 months the consultants will work with a wide range of stakeholders to produce a masterplan to provide a vision of how the town will grow, diversify and prosper in the future.
Announcing the appointment, the Minister said: “The masterplan will act as an important first step forward for the continued regeneration of Dromore for the next 10 to 15 years.
“I would encourage all those with an interest in the future development of the County Down town to work in partnership with the consultants to ensure that the plan fully captures Dromore’s potential. I want to see the town continue to attract new visitors and business whilst at the same time protecting the town’s historic character.”
Catriona Regan, Director of Leisure and Development at Banbridge District Council said: “The Council is very pleased to be working with the Department for Social Development in driving forward a new masterplan for Dromore.
“In recent years, a number of projects which were identified in the Council’s 2003 Development Strategy have been completed and the town has improved as a result, these include Public Realm works in Market Square, the refurbishment of the Town Hall, upgrading of Dromore Town Park and the ongoing ‘Revitalisation’ project, however more needs to be done to ensure that the town remains competitive.
“The new masterplan will provide a clear framework for the delivery of further development projects and will give us the tools to drive forward regeneration in the town.
“It is important that local people work with us on the project and a series of consultations will be scheduled to ensure that the final document reflects the needs of local people.”
Dromore is a historic cathedral town within the Banbridge District Council District and has a number of sites of historic importance. In 1992 Dromore town centre was designated a conservation area by the Department of the Environment.
The master plan will present a framework within which detailed proposals can be developed for a mix of business, tourism, leisure, public space and housing that could be accommodated.

1. The Dromore Master Plan will be produced by G M Design Consultants at a cost of approximately £45,000 for the Department for Social Development.
2. It is expected that the masterplan will take approximately 18 months to complete. There will be a twelve week period of public consultation in the autumn of 2014 when local people will be invited to view the draft proposals and make comments.
