Sports Minister congratulates cyclist on gold success

Stormont press release - Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has praised Martyn Irvine, who won gold in the points race final at the Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester at the weekend.

The Minister said: “This is a superb achievement, one which underlines Martyn’s status as one of the world’s top track cyclists.”

The Newtownards rider, who cycles for Ireland, overcame recent injury to claim the win.

The Minister continued: “It has been an eventful 2013 for Martyn, with early success in the World Track Championships in Belarus marred by a broken leg shortly afterwards. To bookend the year with high-profile wins makes him one of the most impressive local athletes of the past 12 months.”
