Warrenpoint pupil gets first prize for design of new road safety mascot

Stormont Executive press release - Department of the Environment

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan today presented Katie Logan from Carrick PS Warrenpoint with the first prize for her design of a new road safety mascot.

The new mascot has been named Hattie the Hedgehog and will join forces with the current mascot Skooter to continue to teach children how to stay safe on our roads. Katie was one of over 6,400 entries submitted for the competition which closed in October 2013.

Minister Durkan said: “I congratulate Katie with the first prize for her wonderful design for a new road safety mascot, Hattie. It is vital that we teach our children from an early age about good road safety behaviours. Lessons learned as children will help them become better road users in adulthood and help reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.”

Both Skooter and Hattie will appear in the Teaching Aid Calendar 2014/15, a resource provided by the Road Safety Education Office Service (RSEOS) to every nursery and primary school classroom in Northern Ireland. The calendar is printed in three versions, one for lower, middle and upper years all of which contain teaching notes, photographs and illustrations appropriate to the age of children in each class. The Teaching Aid Calendar is now over 40 years old and is as popular as every with children and teachers alike.
