8 out of 10 bored by star’s dull ramblings

Jon Richardson, The White Room

By Andrew Johnston

It's always disappointing when a comedian you enjoy on television turns out to be rather less entertaining on stage.

On 8 Out of 10 Cats, team captain Jon Richardson is a reliably sophisticated font of witticisms.

But given two hours to talk at will on subjects of his choosing, the 30-year-old self-confessed moaner is hard work.

Richardson's Belfast Festival at Queen's show on Saturday night was a draining series of observations, mainly concerning food.

The Lancaster comic babbled on about the correct pronunciation of ‘an onion', sandwich-eating etiquette, the way to arrange spoons in the cutlery drawer...

The only respite was some stuff about porn and — that usual sign of a stand-up in decline — kids.

To compact the deadening effect, the material was riddled with repetitious use of the F-word, disappointing for such a clearly intelligent man.

“I wasted my twenties,” Richardson said at one point. “I didn't do drugs or shag people.”

Perhaps if he had we wouldn't have the uptight and, frankly, quite dull show he puts on now.
