Adele will also perform at the awards ceremony as part of a star-studded line-up of performers including Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Little Mix, James Bay, The Weeknd, Jess Glynne and Rihanna.

She also leads the nominations for the 2016 event, with nods in four categories: British artist video of the year, British female solo artist, British album of the year and British single of the year.

James Bay and Years & Years also have four nominations each.

Coldplay could make Brit Awards history if they are successful in the categories for which they have been nominated, with the most ever wins for British group and British album.

The band, who have just returned with their album A Head Full Of Dreams, won British group in 2012, 2003 and 2001, as well as British album in 2006, 2003 and 2001.

They will be up against Adele's record-breaking 25 in the album category, as well as albums by Florence + The Machine, Jamie XX and Bay.

Amy Winehouse has been nominated posthumously for a Brit Award, in the British female solo artist category alongside Adele, Glynne, Florence Welch, and Laura Marling.

The late singer qualified for a nomination because the soundtrack British documentary film Amy was released and hit the Top 40 during the required dates for the award category.

Although Taylor Swift won last year in the international female artist category and picked up an armful of awards at the Grammys, she was not nominated this year.

However, her boyfriend DJ Calvin Harris has three nominations - for British male solo artist, British single of the year, and British artist video of the year.

Eagles Of Death Metal, whose concert was targeted during the Paris attacks, are up against Irish band U2 in the international group category.

The show will feature a special tribute to David Bowie, who died of cancer just days after celebrating his 69th birthday.

He was named best British male twice - in 1984 and 2014 - and received the outstanding contribution to British music award in 1996.

The ceremony, shown live on ITV, will be hosted by Ant and Dec.

:: The Brit Awards 2016 with MasterCard will take place on February 24 at the 02 Arena in London.
