Sexy songstress Kylie Minogue hit top of the GAY pops yesterday after she
nailed the greatest gay icon of all time accolade.
The Aussie pop princess, who fought a difficult battle with breast cancer
last year, pipped Country and Western legend Dolly Parton to the post for
the esteemed title.
A lot of people took a chance on pop supergroup ABBA, who came third.
In fourth place was Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland, whose lifelong battles
with drink, drugs and men, have assured her a permanent place in gay
iconography.
More than 5,000 gay men and women took part in the poll by global market
research specialists Onepoll.com in a bid to honour true gay icon status
with the most ostentatious outfits, cheesy pop songs and dodgy dance moves.
Perhaps surprisingly, only two men were deemed worthy of top 10 placements.
David Beckham weighed in in sixth place - with his missus Victoria coming in
at 12 - while Peter Andre bagged joint ninth with his partner Katie Price,
aka glamour model Jordan.
"Kylie Minogue epitomises everything a gay icon should be. She's
glamorous, fun, stylish and just a little bit kitsch," said John
Sewell, spokesman for www.Onepoll.com
"These results reveal a really diverse bunch of people. You have the
obvious choices like Doris Day and Judy Garland, but it's great to see the
likes of Richard and Judy and Jordan and Peter in there.
"I'm sure they'll all be proud to be labelled gay icons - it's a real
honour and can do wonders for your celebrity status."
Madonna was ranked seventh, just ahead of Breakfast at Tiffany's star Audrey
Hepburn.
Another celebrity couple to appear in the poll were Welsh songbird Charlotte
Church and her live-in lover Gavin Henson.
The perma-tanned rugby player came in 49th place.
However, Charlotte was placed at an altogether more respectable 38.
Foul-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay scraped in to the poll at number 50.
