Review: This box of tricks is a delight - A Boy and His Box

WHAT can you do with a box?

In a delightful half-hour at the Lyric's Naughton Studio for this year's Belfast Children's Festival, Replay Theatre Company suggested a variety of answers.

It started with a blank sheet. On a small black dais there was a cardboard box, and a white projection screen behind it. Actor Dan Leith was sitting onstage as the young audience entered, and was soon prompted to investigate the box's contents.

By video-linking the real-time pen sketches of illustrator Patrick Sanders, who was seated stage-right at a drawing table, Leith was firstly into a boat, then hot-air balloon, then into fighting a dragon.

Leith invited participation in the last section of the show, and half-a-dozen infants got to climb into the magic box, which was then transformed by Sanders' penmanship into whatever they wanted it to be.
