Belfast Festival at Queen’s: Control
Queen's Film Theatre, 17 Oct 6:45pm
Control tells the story of Ian Curtis, the legendary lead singer of the epochal Joy Division who died tragically young by his own hand in 1980.
The first feature from the acclaimed photographer Anton Corbijn, Control is a superb portrait of a tragic, tormented yet supremely gifted soul.
Epileptic, married young, working in a dole office; Curtis was the antithesis of a rock star, yet with Joy Division, his music, his lyrics, he was the quintessential English romantic who created a soundtrack for the lives of a whole generation.
Funny, bleak, tender and moving, Control is magical on every level; from the outstanding performances of newcomer Sam Riley as Curtis and Samantha Morton as his long-suffering wife Deborah through to the ravishing black and white photography and, of course, and most of all, the music.
