The Elmwood Hall was packed with people keen to hear the former Northern Ireland Secretary give a talk about his “icon of icons” Nelson Mandela.
Nairobi-born Peter Hain gave an insight into Mandela’s life and legacy and spoke of his own role in the anti-apartheid movement.
We heard of his impressive role in highlighting the prejudice in South African society to an international audience.
The sports fanatic chaired the Stop the Seventy Tour, disrupting all-white sporting events in the 70s, which Mandela later told him buoyed the spirits of the incarcerated men.
The evening ended with Hain jokingly adding that the absence of water charges here had perhaps left people with a little spare cash to cover the cost!
An interesting and informed talk, delivered with passion.
