A robust but stylish piano accompaniment to the opening Schubert song set the pace for Swedish singer Camilla Tilling’s recital with German pianist Paul Rivinius in St George’s, High Street.

Each register of Tilling’s vocal range had colour and character.

In Schumann’s Liederkreis Op. 39, Rivinius projected a luminous sound, complementing the rich tones of Tilling’s vocal dramatisations.

Berg’s Seven Early songs also showed great refinement, but it was in the songs of Grieg that Tilling seemed to radiate a particular warmth. The last one in the group deservedly brought the audience to their feet.
