Masterful tour de force from a madcap comic

Terry Alderton's Belfast Festival gig last night was downscaled from the White Room to Bar Sub in the basement of Queen's University students union.

It made for an excitingly intimate evening in a venue that should be used more often for live comedy. It was just a shame more weren't there to see a tour de force performance.

The man makes Lee Evans — his most obvious influence — seem sedate. Alderton only stopped talking, singing, dancing, writhing, standing on his head, clambering over the audience and sitting on one chap's knee long enough to communicate with the voices in his head.

Highlights of the hour-long show included an absurdist conversation between the comic's shoes and a bit of Jimmy Savile mockery.

But Alderton laughed off the audience's occasional blank response. “I get it,” he announced at one point. “You people are waiting for a bus, and I'm the lunatic.” But Alderton is also a comedy craftsman and this was a masterful show.
