Review: Andy White, Mandela Hall

All White on the night

Singer-songwriter-poet Andy White hosted an evening with family and friends at the Mandela Hall in Queen's last night.

The venue was comfortably full as White performed songs from his recent albums as well as readings from his recently published prose work 21st Century Troubadour.

White's songs are well-known in Belfast and beyond and are always popular, even if his voice does lack a little musicality, but the crowd seemed to lap them up as he was backed by his sister Cathy.

The pair were joined on stage by another sister, Ali White, for the readings. The book is a tale of life on a rock and roll tour and is both insightful and at times quite funny.

It was a little confusing to hear, however, as it was written with a single narrative voice yet read by three. The evening didn't flow well but the guitar was a treat and there were fine examples as to why White is a well-respected songwriter.

A little light relief for the evening was provided by support act Anthony Toner. Another Belfast singer-songwriter, Toner regaled the audience with the inspirations for his songs along with a few witty asides.

Although the rather sedate audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the evening had a slap-dash feel about it and was a little sub par musically.

Virgo:

It's difficult to deal with a highly competitive colleague. Every time you submit work, they try to find ways to outperform you. Although you have no interest in pitting your talent against theirs, this other person thinks very differently. Ignoring them won't be possible. A good way to disarm this pest is to invite them out for coffee. Describe what you've observed and ask for a truce. Irrational people are often thrown off balance when their behaviour is addressed in a direct manner.More
